New Jersey ranks as one of the highest areas for mesothelioma and asbestos-related illnesses in the United States. Between 1999 and 2004, the U.S. government reported 674 mesothelioma deaths in the state of New Jersey. New Jersey’s long history with mesothelioma can be traced back to heavy usage of asbestos materials by a high number of industrialized employers.
Shipyards in New Jersey
The use of asbestos for the purposes of fireproofing and insulation was widely accepted throughout the 20th century. Shipbuilding is one of the many industries that relied heavily on the use of asbestos. Ultimately, inhalation of these asbestos fibers would eventually lead to formation of mesothelioma in New Jersey citizens who worked in or around New Jersey shipbuilding companies.
Some of the most notable shipyards located in New Jersey include:
- East Coast Shipyard, Bayonne
- Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock, Newark
- Kearny Yard, Kearny
- New Jersey Drydock, Elizabethport
- New Jersery Shipbuilding, Barber
- Newark Bay Shipyard, Newark
- New York Shipbuilding, Camden
- Penn-Jersey Shipbuilding, Camden
Plants and Facilities
Johns Manville Corporation, a company that was built on the production of asbestos roofing materials, has a long history in New Jersey. The company’s founder was one of the first to identify and promote asbestos as a material for insulation purposes.
New Jersey’s high number of chemical plants, processing plants and refineries are also known areas of high asbestos exposure. Highly industrialized cities such as East Orange, Gibbstown and Hoboken also serve as dangerous sources of mesothelioma in New Jersey.

In April, The United States Surgeon General, Steven K. Galson, made a quiet statement about the dangers of asbestos exposure in honor of National Asbestos Awareness Week. The statement was not widely publicized and did not catch the attention of major advocacy groups until the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) became aware of it in September and began publicizing it.
The statement urges Americans to become “aware of the public health issues of asbestos exposure and the steps they can take to protect their health.” It also reiterates the fact that there is no safe level of asbestos exposure and encourages the public to become aware of asbestos levels in their environment.
He noted, “Once breathed in, asbestos fibers can remain in the lungs for years and even decades. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause inflammation and scarring of the lungs, changes in the lining of the chest cavity around the lung, and certain cancers.”
On September 16 the ADAO issued a press release thanking the U.S. Senate for urging the Surgeon General to make the statement. Linda Reinstein, ADAO Executive Director, commented, “As a mesothelioma widow, I am pleased to see the Surgeon General’s statement, as asbestos has been a known carcinogen for more than thirty years. ADAO is excited to be able to advance educational efforts with his statement, which strongly reaffirms the need to ban asbestos.” This statement is the first from any Surgeon General about the dangers of asbestos.
Despite heavy opposition by asbestos victims, mesothelioma lawyers, and other mesothelioma advocacy groups, asbestos is still in use in the United States. Bills banning the substance have been presented in recent Congressional Sessions, but were killed in committee.

Asbestos has been used as a building material in Massachusetts shipyards and buildings for more than 100 years. The state’s long history of industrialized economy has served to provide Massachusetts with an unusually high number of mesothelioma-related cases and deaths. For many, a Massachusetts mesothelioma lawyer has succeeded in helping sufferers receive fair compensation.
Shipbuilding in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is home to a variety of government and private shipbuilding companies. For much of the last century, ships built in the state have relied heavily on asbestos products for insulation and fireproofing. Unfortunately, this has led to a number of mesothelioma cases among Massachusetts shipbuilders, longshoremen and naval workers.
Some of the most prominent shipbuilding industries in Massachusetts include:
- Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown
- Fore River Shipyard, Quincy
- Victory Yard, Squantum
- Bethlehem Hingham, Hingham
- Bethlehem Atlantic Works, Boston
- Quincy Adams Yacht Yard, Quincy
- General Dynamics, Quincy
- George Lawley and Sons, Neponset
Asbestos Mining
Massachusetts also has a long history of direct asbestos manufacturing. Two asbestos mines have operated in Massachusetts, and naturally-occurring deposits of the material have been found in the vicinity of Pittsfield and Harvard forest.
A North Cambridge asbestos mine has been linked to W.R. Grace and Company – an asbestos manufacturer based out of Libby, Montana. W.R. Grace has undergone federal indictments on the claim that they knowingly exposed citizens and employees to unsafe levels of asbestos. Additional W.R. Grace facilities can be found in Woburn and Walpole.

Join the mesothelioma lawyers at Simon, Eddins & Greenstone, LLP, and spread the word. Today marks the fourth year cities and radio stations across the country publicize National Mesothelioma Awareness Day. The event seeks to draw the public’s attention to the need for research funding to find a cure for this aggressive and deadly cancer.
More than 100 radio stations will play music by singer-songwriter and mesothelioma victim Warren Zevon . A short segment about mesothelioma will follow.
The event began in 2005 when a group of volunteers working for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation organized to draw awareness of the disease and lack of treatment options. Everyone in the group had been personally affected by mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma attorneys, mesothelioma victims and their families, and other advocates are seizing this yearly opportunity to remind people to be screened for mesothelioma if they have been exposed to asbestos at any point in their lives.
For more information about the campaign to spread awareness, including resources to involve local government and radio stations in the event next year, visit the Mesothelioma Awareness webpage.

Between the years of 1998 and 2004, the United States government recorded 1095 mesothelioma-related deaths in the state of Florida. In terms of asbestos-related deaths, only California recorded a higher number of cases over this time period.
Florida Shipyards
Florida’s many shipyards are one of the main reasons that the state has such a high number of mesothelioma cases. Throughout the 20th century, asbestos was widely used in the construction of ships for both government and private sectors. Use of asbestos fibers for fireproofing and insulation of numerous key ship components (plumbing, walls, etc.) exposed countless dock workers, naval personnel and others to unsafe levels of asbestos.
Shipyards located in Florida include:
- Broward Marine, Fort Lauderdale
- Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Panama City
- J.A. Jones Construction, Panama City
- Gibbs Gas Engine, Jacksonville
- St. Johns River Shipbuilding, Jacksonville
- Tampa Marine, Tampa
- Tampa Shipbuilding, Tampa
Plants and Facilities
Shipbuilding is not the only industry in Florida related to asbestos exposure and mesothelioma. A processing plant in Tampa has been manufacturing insulation products made from vermiculite for years. Additionally, asbestos insulation was used extensively for insulation purposes in chemical plants and power plants for decades throughout the state of Florida. Even one of Florida’s highest profile government institutions, Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, has a history of exposing workers to asbestos materials.
