Adding sirolimus to chemotherapy with cisplatin has been shown to be more effective against mesothelioma than cisplatin alone, say some researchers at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. The study was conducted specifically in the hopes of uncovering a more effective treatment for the cancer, stating that “[it] sought to determine whether combination treatment with sirolimus and cisplatin would enhance cell death in malignant pleural mesothelioma.”
Sirolimus, a drug that was first discovered as a product of a certain bacterium in a soil sample taken from Easter Island, was originally developed as an inti-fungal and later adapted as a powerful immunosuppressant used to prevent organ rejection in patients receiving kidney transplants. Most recently the drug is being tested for its possible applications in the treatment of mesothelioma.
The immunosuppressant sirolimus is a powerful antiproliferative which can restrict cell growth and development as well as cell proliferation in certain circumstances. Sirolimus affects cell growth by inhibiting the mammalian target of rapamycin, or mTOR, a protein indicated in certain cell growth behaviors. Some researchers believe that mTOR could cause malignant cells to reproduce more aggressively, and that inhibiting mTOR could result in slower spread and easier treatment of some cancers.
The study consisted of incubating malignant pleural mesothelioma cells with sirolimus or cisplatin alone or in combination and analyzing the results. The effects of the drug combination were also analyzed in tumors with varying resistance to the drug cisplatin. The drug combination substantially increased cell death in comparison to either drug used alone.
The results of the study were definitely positive, and may lead to the development of more effective mesothelioma treatments. The study stated that:
“Sirolimus appears to enhance the cytotoxicity of cisplatin in malignant pleural mesothelioma cell lines through the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway. These results provide a basis for the clinical evaluation of combined sirolimus and cisplatin chemotherapy in malignant pleural mesothelioma.”
Research continues to fully understand the implications of these findings. Scientists across the world continue to study new ways to combat mesothelioma, and every new discovery provides new hope for mesothelioma patients and their families alike.

Several new studies are confirming an existing sentiment in the mesothelioma research community. Many physicians have believed for some time that the most successful mesothelioma treatment regiments include several different forms of therapy.
Cancer treatments often include one or more of three different types of treatment: surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. While the specifics of individual cases vary, generally, surgery is required to remove malignant tumors and tissues while radiation or chemotherapy are used to accomplish and maintain remission of the cancer. Treatment centers have often found that combinations of surgical, chemical and radiation therapy tend to produce the best results, and now, new studies are confirming those beliefs.
One such study was published in the European Journal of Surgical Oncology. The study analyzed the results of surgery performed in concert with chemotherapy in seventeen different patients suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma, that is, a form of the cancer found in the abdominal cavity rather than the lungs. The researcher’s findings confirmed a common sentiment in the mesothelioma treatment community, stating that “Cytoreductive surgery combined with intraperitoneal chemotherapy appears to be the optimal treatment for selected patients with peritoneal mesothelioma… …Increased familiarity with this condition’s presentation and natural history, and knowledge of available treatment options, will hopefully facilitate treatment of these patients.” In summary, the study concludes that surgery in combination with chemotherapy tend to show better results than any single form of treatment.
Another study recently completed in Victoria, Australia, introduced a new form of radiotherapy but still concluded that combination treatments yielded the most encouraging results. While the new radiotherapy treatment has shown great potential in treating various forms of mesothelioma, the CEO of the Cancer Council of Australia, Ian Olver, said in regards to the study, “I think it’s an important finding that radiation has a useful role along with other therapies, not so much on its own, so they’ve really found the niche for radiotherapy in this disease.”
As public recognition of mesothelioma and its diagnoses continue to rise, the understanding of its effective treatment is growing. The aforementioned advances in radiotherapy could potentially grant another few years of life to mesothelioma patients, and research in the field of newer, more effective treatments continues to grow.

North Dakota’s persistence in maintaining an agricultural based economy may be the primary factor in the state’s low incidence of mesothelioma deaths. The exact number of deaths isn’t available, but estimates place the state between 46th and 50th in over all deaths due to mesothelioma.
A few industries in North Dakota are considered to be responsible for many cases of asbestos exposure. These include, but are not limited to:
- Oil companies such as BP Amoco, Mandan Oil, Signal Oil, and Standard Oil Co.
- Air Force Bases and missile silos including Grand Forks and Minot
- Power generation stations such as Coyote Station Electric Plant and Dakota Public Service Power Plant
- Construction and insulation companies such as W.R. Grace’s Zonolite Factory
Asbestos even found its way into agriculture. The manufacturing process of making fertilizer often included asbestos. Vermiculite, a common additive to potting soils, has been known to have been contaminated with asbestos.
Because the state is mostly rural, few treatment options are available; none of these treatment centers specialize in treating mesothelioma. If you seek mesothelioma expertise, you may find the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota can meet your needs.
If you’ve been diagnosed with mesothelioma, be sure to contact a North Dakota mesothelioma lawyer to review your legal options.

North Carolina has reported a minimum of 899 mesothelioma deaths since 1979. For years mesothelioma was confused with or just called lung cancer, so many deaths recorded in the state as lung cancer were actually caused by pleural mesothelioma.
Asbestos exposure occurred frequently in many industries where asbestos was used in manufacturing, insulating, and fireproofing applications. In North Carolina, these industries include, but are not limited to:
- Oil
- Shipping and shipbuilding, both commercial and naval
- Manufacturing, such as paper, wood products, textiles and chemicals
- Metal including steel and copper
- Power generation—steam, hydroelectric and nuclear
- Construction—most buildings constructed before 1980 contained asbestos
Folks that have been exposed to asbestos and have received a mesothelioma diagnosis should know that North Carolina law limits how much time they have to file a lawsuit after diagnosis. Be sure to consult a North Carolina mesothelioma lawyer as soon as possible to learn your legal options.
North Carolina law has established that mesothelioma victims that can prove asbestos exposure have a right to file a lawsuit against those responsible. In most cases, multiple asbestos manufacturers and employers are implicated and named as defendants in a case.
Each defendant may opt to offer a settlement rather than to go through a trial. Depending on the details of your case, this may or may not be in your best interest. Rest assured that the mesothelioma lawyers at Simon, Eddins & Greenstone, LLP, have the resources and experience to take your case through the entire legal process, including trial, if necessary.

No state has been able to escape the destruction of asbestos, including New Mexico. The state is home to a number of naturally occurring asbestos deposits, so anyone living or working nearby may have been exposed to asbestos.
When asbestos deposits occur near the ground surface, they can be disturbed by everything from vehicles to foot traffic. When disturbed, the long, flexible, and microscopic fibers of the mineral can become dust in the air and be breathed in or even swallowed, possibly leading to an asbestos disease such as mesothelioma years later.
In addition to its natural asbestos history, the state received hundreds of thousands of tons of asbestos contaminated insulation over a period of decades and that insulation was put in nearly every home and building constructed before about 1980.
Even though asbestos use became highly restricted and regulated in the 1970s, the substance has not been removed from many New Mexico buildings and homes and still poses a threat.
In addition, mesothelioma victims may not show symptoms for decades after their exposure, so even though it’s been 30 years since the substance was largely put out of use, it is expected that new cases of mesothelioma will be diagnosed for decades to come in New Mexico.
If you have suspect you may have been exposed to asbestos in New Mexico, or have been diagnosed with the disease and are looking for treatment in the state, read our more detailed page on New Mexico mesothelioma lawyers.
