History of Asbestos in Arizona
Asbestos mining and manufacturing play a prominent part in the economic history of Arizona. Arizona is one of the states where asbestos was directly mined. In 2007 the United States Geological Survey listed 106 naturally occurring asbestos sites in the state. This naturally occurring substance can also contaminate other mined substances. This is true of the copper mining and smelting industry in Arizona where many workers before 1990 were exposed to asbestos.
The state was also home to a number of power plants during the years that asbestos was a key component in wire insulator, turbines, generators, and other products common to the industry.
During the middle decades of the 20th century, Arizona received thousands of shipments, equaling more than 215,000 tons, of asbestos-contaminated vermiculite from the infamous W.R. Grace Company. Their mine in Libby, Montana, allegedly resulted in thousands of locals being exposed to asbestos leading to hundreds of asbestos related diagnoses and deaths.
Numerous other industries in the state, such as construction, manufactured or used asbestos products and may be responsible for mesothelioma cases.
