History of Asbestos in Connecticut
This tiny state, located along the Eastern Seaboard, was a leader in the industrialization of the United States beginning in the late 19th century. Throughout the 20th century, the state economy continued to depend, in large part, on manufacturing.
The height of asbestos use in the United States occurred in the 1930s – 1970's and Connecticut's manufacturing of textiles, paper goods and chemicals commonly involved workplace environments contaminated with asbestos.
Additionally, the state's location along the Atlantic Ocean made it a strategic area for the production of government and commercial marine vessels. It has been the home of the United States Submarine Force since 1868 and has been called the “Submarine Capitol of the World.”
Shipyards are well known for their application of asbestos to piping, insulating, heating, cooling and fireproofing in the building of ships. Shipyard workers or employees that worked on these ships have been exposed to asbestos and too many are diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Asbestos Exposure in Workplaces and Unions
20th century members of these Connecticut unions, among others, may have been exposed to workplace asbestos:
- AFL-CIO - The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations
- IAFF – International Association of Firefighters vIBB – International Brotherhood of Boilermakers
- IBEW – International Brotherhood of Electric Workers
- ILA – International Longshoreman's Association
- IW – Iron Workers
- UAW – United Auto Workers
- USWA – United Steel Workers
Asbestos-related Deaths in Connecticut
The Environmental Working Group reports that from 1979 through 2001, there were 498 asbestos related deaths in the state; 249 from mesothelioma.
