History of Asbestos in Indiana

Indiana is one of the few states that has no known deposits of naturally occurring asbestos. However, a number of Indiana's major industries are associated with asbestos exposure and mesothelioma. For example, the many steel mills in the state routinely used asbestos as a flame retardant in protective clothing for workers throughout the 20th century. U.S. Steel in particular, located in Gary, Indiana, has been taken to court several times by previous workers who were diagnosed with mesothelioma later in life.

Auto manufacturing plants, oil refineries, chemical plants, and insulation plants in Indiana also have a history of asbestos exposure. As with the steel industry, the high levels of heat used during these manufacturing processes often brought the insulating properties of asbestos into the workplace. If you previously worked in such an industry, then an Indiana mesothelioma attorney can help you seek fair compensation from your previous or current employer.

Power and electricity plants also posed a risk to Indiana workers. Highly industrialized cities where mesothelioma may include Campbell, Cayuga, Gallagher, Gary, Laketon, Mount Vernon and Whiting.

Even when not handled directly (for example, if asbestos was used as insulation in the walls), harmful asbestos exposure can occur. Asbestos-related Deaths in Indiana

It is estimated that between 428 and 698 people in Indiana died from mesothelioma between the years of 1979 and 2000. Additionally, another 140 died from asbestosis. These figures are based off of a retroactive study that reviewed the death certificates of U.S. citizens.

Improved record keeping for asbestos-related deaths began in 1999. At this time, the U.S. government instituted tabulation criteria that specifically kept track of mesothelioma deaths. Through this initiative, it is known that 332 Indiana residents died from mesothelioma between the years of 1999 and 2004.

Where to Find Help

Confronting a mesothelioma diagnosis can be difficult. However, if you are experiencing symptoms of the illness, then your health should not be ignored. The earlier mesothelioma is diagnosed and treated, the more mesothelioma treatment options are likely to be available. As such, seeking medical treatment from an experienced mesothelioma doctor is imperative.
