History of Asbestos in Maryland
Maryland's unique combination of old-world history and modern industries have resulted in a slightly higher likelihood for asbestos exposure when compared to many others of the United States. Like most states, Maryland is home to a number of chemical plants, paper mills, power plants and other worksites associated with heavy manufacturing processes. Asbestos-related Deaths in Maryland
A study conducted in 2004 suggests that between 453 and 747 Maryland citizens died from mesothelioma between the years of 1979 and 2000. Another 633 deaths for the state during that time period have been attributed to asbestosis, another asbestos-related illness.
Mesothelioma deaths began being tracked more thoroughly in 1999. Between the years of 1999 and 2004, the U.S. government reported 320 mesothelioma-related deaths in Maryland. When compared to the state's total population, death rates from mesothelioma are higher in Maryland than the national average.
