History of Asbestos in Minnesota

Historically, asbestos has had a smaller impact on the state of Minnesota than larger, highly industrialized states. Nevertheless, hundreds of people in the state have died from mesothelioma and other asbestos-related disease.

Recently, there has been a lot of attention on the Masabi iron ore mines in northeastern Minnesota. A naturally occurring substance called taconite is commonly found in the mines there. It is believed that the taconite is contaminated with asbestos. Workers at these companies have been diagnosed with lung diseases including cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma, but the companies have strongly denied that any asbestos was present.

At least 48 cases of mesothelioma among workers and their families have gained the state legislature's attention. They have commissioned the University of Minnesota to conduct a study on the mines to determine if there is any relationship between taconite and mesothelioma.
