History of Asbestos in Oklahoma
Throughout the 20th century, much of Oklahoma's economy was linked to oil—either direct processing of it in refineries or in chemical plants that made use of petroleum products and byproducts.
Asbestos and the diseases it causes—asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, are also linked to oil. The reason for this connection is that fire was and is a major concern in any facility processing oil. In those days, asbestos was a widely accepted and used fireproofing and flame retardant material in oil facilities as well as chemical plants. It was also used as an insulator, and was an ingredient in numerous products.
The benefits of asbestos—its durability, cheap cost, resistance to electricity and fire, and quality as an insulator among other benefits—were highly marketed by asbestos companies. In fact, some companies even advertised asbestos as a life saving material in buildings and facilities where fire was a risk.
Tragically, for much of the century, the drawbacks of asbestos, primarily the fact that it was a toxic substance and a carcinogen, were not made public. Instead, many asbestos companies covered up their knowledge about how deadly it was. As a result, millions of people across the country and in Oklahoma were exposed to asbestos and put at risk for developing mesothelioma.

Asbestos-related Deaths in Oklahoma
Deaths in Oklahoma from mesothelioma are believed to have been significantly underreported between 1979 and 2001: 232. Reasons for this are several, but the fact that mesothelioma can be confused with lung cancer is one factor. Also, the Centers for Disease Control didn't begin requiring reporting of mesothelioma deaths until 1999, when figures roughly doubled.
Other asbestos related deaths in the state totaled 104, and quite possibly more.
