History of Asbestos in Rhode Island
For much of the state's history, textile manufacturing has played a large part in Rhode Island's economy. During the 20th century, when asbestos was heavily used in many industries, asbestos exposure was commonly associated with textile manufacturing. This may or may not be the case for Rhode Island.
Because the state is so small, some conclusions are difficult to draw. It is known, however, that the state is also home for a number of commercial and naval shipyards, and these are linked with asbestos exposure—both for the builders and the people that lived and worked on the ships.
As with all other states, other industries in Rhode Island affected by asbestos in the late 1800s and throughout the 1900s include construction, power plants, and a variety of manufacturing facilities.

Asbestos-related Deaths in Rhode Island
Rhode Island appears to have been less impacted by asbestos than other states along the East Coast, perhaps because it was too small to attract or accommodate many of the industries commonly associated with the deadly substance.
Nevertheless, too many people in the state, as well as the rest of the country, were exposed and some of those exposures led to the development of asbestos related diseases that caused asbestosis and mesothelioma.
The Environmental Working Group reports that between 1979 and 2001, 115 deaths were attributed to mesothelioma. This figure is believed to be significantly lower than actual numbers, but exact figures are not available because of a number of factors.
