History of Asbestos in Virginia
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found in the ground in states around the country and around the world. Virginia is one of the states were asbestos deposits are located, and in this state are abundant. Two mines were heavily worked before asbestos regulations were put in place, but these are now closed.
Asbestos can also contaminate other minerals and substances when they are mined. In Virginia, this is the case for vermiculite. For years, and still today, a vermiculite mine in the state has been selling about 100,000 tons a year of asbestos contaminated vermiculite to states across the nation. Recent tests on the mine show heavy amounts of asbestos in the air, vermiculite and in and surrounding the mine.
Virginia is also home to numerous industries associated with asbestos exposure: chemical plants, commercial and naval shipbuilding and shipyards, manufacturing, power plants, construction, paper mills, phone and electricity, automotive, military bases, railroad and others.
Companies with Possible Asbestos Exposure
These companies/workplaces were in business during heavy asbestos use or inhabit buildings where asbestos was used in the construction. They are believed to have had asbestos present where workers could have been exposed and become at risk for mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.

Asbestos-related Deaths in Virginia
599 deaths were attributed to mesothelioma in Virginia between 1979 and 2001. This number is considered an estimate because mesothelioma was often listed as lung cancer on death certificates.
Also, the Centers for Disease Control did not mandate mesothelioma death reporting until 1999, when many states saw their numbers nearly double.

Coping with mesothelioma is difficult. There is the pain and recovery of treatment, transportation and housing challenges, the emotional strain for the victim and loved ones, struggling to pay for mounting medical bills, and much more. No one wants to have to deal with a lawsuit on top of all this.
For many mesothelioma victims, however, it is necessary. Your family may have no way to pay for your medical bills and may not have enough income to stay afloat. Many people also feel angry at companies that exposed them to asbestos or betrayed by employers they gave the best years of their life to—and should have protected them.
Depending on the details of your case, a Virginia mesothelioma attorney may be able to help you receive financial compensation for your losses and help you hold those responsible for your mesothelioma accountable.
