Products Affected by Asbestos

What is Asbestos?

The term “asbestos” refers to a number of naturally occurring mineral fibers.  These fibers are strong, durable, poor conductors of electricity and are heat resistant.  Because of these properties, they have been used since 1880 in more than 3500 products:

  • Friction products such as railroad and automotive brakes and clutches
  • Fireproofing and acoustical texturing products
  • Insulation
  • Gaskets and packing products
  • Textiles and clothing
  • Vermiculite products
  • Packing, taping and spackling products
  • Building materials such as siding, roofing, wallboard and tiles

Asbestos has also been used in consumer products such as baby powder and cigarette filters, and particularly in electrical appliances such as hair dryers, crock pots, toasters, coffee pots, baby powder, cigarette filters and popcorn poppers.

Asbestos is Deadly

It has been known for decades that exposure to asbestos fibers causes deadly illness.  The fibers are microscopic and are easily inhaled or swallowed.  Even small amounts of asbestos inhaled or swallowed as dust can stay in the body for years and cause asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma of the lung and/or peritoneum.

Even secondary exposure, such as coming in contact with someone who has asbestos on their clothes, can cause illness; many family members of people who worked with asbestos have been diagnosed with diseases such as mesothelioma.

What Products Contain Asbestos

Many asbestos containing products have been pulled from the market, but not in time to prevent thousands of deaths from exposure.  Below is a list of many products known to contain asbestos, either currently or in the past.  The list doesn’t include every product that ever contained asbestos, but should give you a good idea of the types of products involved.

If you’re concerned that you may have been exposed to asbestos, contact your physician right away.  For more information on specific products, ask SEG Law.
