Early Evidence of Danger
There are approximately 300 victims a year diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) in the United States. The great majority of victims experience the reaction as a result of taking prescription or over the counter (OTC) medications such as ibuprofen.
As early as the 1970's, there was evidence to suggest the ibuprofen caused SJS and TEN Syndrome in susceptible individuals. By the 1990's, the evidence was conclusive and drug manufacturers began listing both disorders among the risks associated with taking ibuprofen on physician literature for prescription varieties of the drug such as Children's Motrin.
Warnings Relaxed
When a number of ibuprofen containing drugs were released by the FDA from prescription to over the counter use, the labeling changed and the warning about SJS and TEN was removed.
As experienced SJS attorneys, SEGLaw is concerned about this inadequate warning, especially considering the fact that Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis can cause severe debilitation and even death in people as young as 3 months old.
SJS Attorneys Protecting Your Rights
As consumers, you have a right to know the risks of the medicines you take. If an over the counter drug can cause blindness, terrible scarring, lung damage or death from SJS or TEN, you should be warned on the bottle.
