What is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS)?

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is classified as an immune-complex-mediated hypersensitivity disorder. For those without medical training, SJS Syndrome can be understood as a serious adverse reaction to a prescription or over the counter medication, such as ibuprofen.

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Symptoms

SJS symptoms most often begin with a rash and then rapidly and aggressively progresses to sheets of skin sloughing off the body and large sores developing on mucous membranes such as in the nose, genital area, esophagus and eyes. The victim appears to have serious burns and the mucous membranes can be so affected that eating and drinking become impossible.

Once the layers of skin have fallen off, the open or "denuded" skin can lead to:

  • Bacterial infections
  • Loss of water from the body (dehydration)
  • Dangerous lesions in the lungs that can interfere with breathing
  • Crippling scars and blindness
  • Death

SJS Symptoms can involve up to 10% of the body. If more of the body is involved, an even more deadly disorder is indicated: Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). Both SJS and TEN can cause death.

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Causes

Use of Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) significantly increases the risk of developing SJS and TEN. NSAIDs are available by prescription and over the counter. Ibuprofen, the active drug in Advil and Motrin is a NSAID. It is also the active ingredient in many other prescription and over the counter medications. Learn more about SJS Causes and the medications that contain ibuprofen.

SJS Syndrome Treatment

Tragically, once a reaction begins, it must run its course; however, some medications have shown success in shortening the duration of the reaction. Medical personnel try to ease the patient's pain and prevent secondary conditions, such an infection and dehydration.

SJS Attorney

Pharmaceutical companies have known for years that people that take medications such as Ibuprofen are at risk for developing Stevens-Johnson Syndrome or TEN. But they have failed to adequately warn consumers of this potentially deadly risk. If you or a loved on has been a victim of SJS or TEN, you may have a right to compensation for your injuries and expenses.
