What is Four Loko?
Four Loko, sometimes called 4 Loko, was marketed as an energy drink and sold in Liquor stores, convenience stores, and other places where beer and wine is available. It was a malt alcoholic drink, with caffeine, taurine and guarana added. The company that manufactured and distributed the product is Phusion Projects and operates as Drink Four Brewing Company.
Between 2005 and 2010, Four Loko became very popular among college students and other youth because it was cheap, one can contained as much alcohol as several beers, and caffeine and other additives in it masked the negative feelings of intoxication.
Four Loko Deaths
Tragically, the very ingredients that made Four Loko popular also made it extremely dangerous. The caffeine and other stimulants disguised how intoxicated drinkers really were, leading many of them to drink too much. Additionally, in many people the caffeine increased the effects of the alcohol, seriously taxing their central nervous systems causing blackouts, alcohol poisoning, coma and even death.
Dozens of college students across the United States were hospitalized after drinking Four Loko. Multiple deaths have been linked to the product.
By November of 2010, college and university campuses as well as states across the country were calling for a ban on the product. Just prior to the FDA banning Four Loko, Drink Four took the product off the shelves--replacing it with a reformulated version that doesn’t contain caffeine, taurine or guarana.
