Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis is a disease that has been linked to GBCAs (Gadolinium Based Contrast Agents) used during MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) scans. In particular, the disease has been found in people that have renal disorders or renal failure and were given a GBCA.
The symptoms of NSF include:
- Skin: burning, itching, thickening, swelling, hardening, red or darkened patches. Skin becomes tight and can impair movement.
- Eyes: raised yellow spots that can interfere with sight.
- Joints/muscles: deep joint pain, especially in hips and ribs; muscle weakness, fibrosis in thigh muscles and lower abdomen.
- Organs: fibrosis in lungs and diaphragm leading to breathing difficulty.
At this time, there is no known treatment for NSF. It typically worsens over time and can lead to death.
GBCAs a Known Danger
There are five gadolinium based contrast agents. They are:
- Magnevist
- MultiHance
- Omniscan
- OptiMARK
- ProHance
All of these products have been linked to NSF and/or a related disease, Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD). Evidence found by NFS attorneys indicates that companies producing GBCAs were aware of the dangers these products posed to patients with renal failure. However, they did not adequately warn of the risks.
Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires GBCA manufacturers to use “black box warnings” on product literature and packaging. A black box warning is the strongest warning that the FDA requires and means that medical studies have shown the drug can cause serious adverse effects that can be life threatening.
